David Elkins is a director of photography and still photographer based in the San Francisco Bay Area. Highly skilled in verité, or reality, style shooting as well as formally lit interviews, David is highly skilled with a variety of cameras, lighting equipment and audio gear. He works as a contract DP shooting for corporate and network clients while preparing for his next documentary film production. David has produced, directed and edited several short documentaries and has credits on feature documentaries as second camera and field sound recordist for Before the Music Dies (premiered at South By Southwest 2006) and as camera operator for On the Sly: In Search of the Family Stone.
With a background in still photography, David has worked as a newspaper and freelance photojournalist around the country. His photographs have appeared in such publications as the New York Times, New York Post, San Francisco Chronicle and San Jose Mercury News, and he has been recognized by regional and national organizations for his photographic work.
David developed a keen sense of composition and light from his years as a photographer, which is evident in his video and documentary film work today. He transitioned to the moving image while working on his Master’s in Journalism at the University of Texas at Austin.
